Enhance Vaginal Comfort

Reviewed by Dr. Barb DePree, MD

Compensating for lower hormone levels means taking care of yourself!

Lower estrogen levels affect the natural vaginal moisturizers and lubricants that made life so simple when we were younger. As your hormone levels change, you'll need to take steps to keep your tissues vital. Vaginal dryness treatments may include lubricants during intimacy or the regular use of vaginal moisturizers to keep vaginal tissues in shape and responsive. Vaginal dilators can help with elasticity. Find out more by checking out the suggestions below or watching the video.

Try these actions. We’ve started with the simplest first.

Use a Vaginal Lubricant
Sexual lubricants for women are made to reduce friction during sex, making sex more enjoyable.

Use a Moisturizer
Vaginal dryness treatments can include moisturizers, creams or suppositories applied to the vagina, or supplementing or replacing natural vaginal moisturizers.

Use a Vulvar Soothing Cream
If you are experiencing pain, itching, burning, redness, or dryness of the vulva, or just plain sensitivity to touch, you may want to try an over-the-counter soothing product.

Dilators

Use Vaginal Dilators
Vaginal dilators are another option to enhance comfort. Vaginal dilators are tools of graduated widths; with regular use, vaginal dilators develop or restore the vaginal opening.

Test Your Vaginal pH
Vaginas with a pH that is slightly acidic keep clean and clear of unfriendly bacteria. A pH imbalance often results in itching or irritation.

Localized Hormones
Localized hormone therapy is a prescription estrogen supplement provided on location.

Alternatives to Intercourse
We may age, and our sexual abilities may change. But our need for physical affection, playfulness, and emotional intimacy never leaves us.
